Light Installation in Newtown

Downlights sagging in a plaster ceiling, a hallway pendant that's flickered since the last owner lived here, a rear-lane fitting that's never worked properly. Newtown's terraces collect these jobs.

A single fitting or a whole-home LED upgrade, it's licensed work either way. Call (02) 9538 7139 and we'll quote it properly before anyone touches the ceiling.

When It Is Time for Light Installation

Old fittings and older wiring both send warning signs before they properly fail.

Book a look if you're noticing:

  • A pendant or downlight that flickers or buzzes when switched on
  • Fittings that run hot to the touch, or discolour the ceiling around them
  • Old halogen downlights you'd rather swap for cooler-running LEDs
  • An outdoor light that's stopped working, or was never wired to code
  • A renovation or extension that needs new light points planned in
  • A dimmer that doesn't behave, or a switch that's stopped matching its fitting

A flickering light on its own is often the same fault behind a flickering lights call-out; worth mentioning if it's been happening a while.

Light Installation: What We Actually Do

Every light job starts with a look at what's already there and what the ceiling will allow.

Downlights. LED downlight installs and halogen-to-LED swaps, including fire-rated covers where insulation demands it.

Indoor fittings. Pendants, batten fittings, dimmers and switch upgrades, matched to the room and the existing wiring.

Outdoor lighting. Weatherproof fittings for courtyards, entries and rear lanes, wired to withstand Sydney's weather.

LED upgrades. Whole-home conversions from older halogen or fluorescent fittings to LED, cutting running cost as a side benefit.

We fit premium name-brand fittings as standard, and you're free to supply your own instead if you've already bought something.

The Factors Behind a Light Installation Quote

A single downlight swap and a whole-home LED conversion are different jobs, priced differently.

What moves the number:

  • How many points are being installed or replaced
  • Ceiling access, particularly in older terraces with tight roof cavities
  • Whether new circuits or switching are needed, or it's a straight swap
  • The fittings chosen, from a basic batten holder to a premium pendant
  • Any wiring found along the way that needs bringing up to standard

There's no charge for the quote itself, and it's fixed in writing before anything starts. $50 off your first service applies on a first booking.

Second weave, roof cavity access: Federation-era terraces with steep hips and shallow eaves, common through Newtown, sometimes leave barely enough crawl space for a straight downlight run, and that access shapes the quote more than the fitting itself does.

The Newtown Angle on Light Installation

Newtown's housing runs on two building waves: the dense Victorian and Federation terraces from the 1880s to 1910s, and the walk-ups and infill that followed decades later.

Off Church Street, a lot of those original terraces still carry lath-and-plaster ceilings, which changes how a downlight goes in compared with a modern plasterboard ceiling.

The plaster doesn't like being cut carelessly, so fitting placement gets planned before anyone picks up a hole saw.

Newer units built during the later infill wave are usually a simpler job, with plasterboard ceilings and more predictable cable runs.

How We Work Through a Light Installation Job

  1. Walk through and plan. We look at the ceiling, existing wiring and your preferred fitting layout.
  2. Quote in writing. One number covers labour, fittings if we're supplying them, and testing.
  3. Install and test. Fittings go in, circuits are tested, and dimmers or switches are checked against the fittings.
  4. Hand over. We explain what's been done and confirm whether the job triggered a compliance certificate.

A handful of downlights in an accessible ceiling is usually a half-day job. A full-home LED conversion in a terrace with tight roof access runs longer, which we'll flag before booking, not on arrival.

What NSW Requires for Light Installation

Light fitting work touching wiring or new circuits sits under AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules, and it's licensed-only under NSW law.

A straight fitting-for-fitting swap on existing wiring is more routine, but anything involving a new circuit or point is notifiable work, meaning it gets tested and a certificate lodged with NSW Fair Trading.

Fire-rated downlight covers are required wherever ceiling insulation sits close to the fitting, a common issue in older Newtown roof spaces.

DIY electrical work is illegal in NSW regardless of how small the job looks from the ground.

The Difference on a Light Installation Job

The fixtures and switchgear we fit are picked because they keep working after years of daily on-off cycling, not cheap imports.

That's the difference between a fitting that lasts and one that's flickering again inside a year.

There are no hidden costs once the job's underway, and every fitting we install is backed by our lifetime workmanship guarantee.

Servicing Newtown and the Suburbs Around It

We install lighting right across Newtown and into Camperdown, Stanmore, Marrickville and Annandale.

A layout needing an extra circuit the current board can't supply usually points to switchboard upgrades, and a full lighting overhaul across the house sits under residential electrician instead.

Terrace or unit, it makes no difference to how we quote or fit the job.

Common questions

Common Light Installation FAQs

Lighting jobs bring up a fairly consistent set of questions from Newtown homeowners. Here's what we're asked most.

Can I choose the brand of gear for light installation?

You can, though we fit Clipsal and Hager gear as our standard because it holds up well over years of daily switching. Happy to talk through a specific brand if you've got one in mind.

What do you need from me on the day?

Clear access to the room and a rough idea of where you'd like each fitting. We'll confirm placement with you before anything goes in the ceiling.

Who supplies the parts, you or me?

We supply and fit SAL and Beacon Lighting fittings as standard. You're also welcome to supply your own and we'll install to the same standard.

Do you offer light installation in Newtown on weekends?

Standard hours run Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm. Let us know what suits when you call and we'll check the diary.

Will I get a Certificate of Compliance?

Yes, where the work is notifiable. Straightforward fitting swaps don't always trigger it, but anything involving new circuits does, and we'll confirm which applies before we start.

Can you give me a ballpark on light installation?

It depends on the number of points, ceiling access and whether new wiring is needed. We look at the job first and give you a fixed price in writing, not a guess.
